James was a drummer-boy when he was nine years old, during the early Revolution. Later he was stationed at Fort Lee, now Charleston, W.Va. where he served under Capt. Hugh Caperton of Greenbrier Co., Va guarding the Kanawha settlements against Indian attacks.  James later served in the Ky militia, Company C. ( Source Lawrence County, Ky. Cemeteries, Vol 3, 1997)
